Tropical Flowers

Some popular tropical flowers are birds of paradise which are come in a few colors and closely resemble the birds they get their name from. They are native to south Africa, and grow in clusters that rise to about four feet tall. It is related to the banana tree, and grows in a similar way. It takes about three years of growth before it will bloom, but after that, blooming increases every year.

The largest of all tropical flowers is the Titan Arum which was first discovered in Sumatra, Indonesia. In the wild its blooms range from 7-12 feet in height. A mature plant can have leaves that are 20 feet tall and 15 feet in diameter making it the superstar of the botanical world. The bloom has a stench that has been described as a rotting elephant corpse which earned this plant the nickname “Mr. Stinky”.

Another interesting tropical flower is the Bat plant, commonly called the devil flower because it resembles a sinister looking face. It is native to southeast Asia, and has bat colored and shaped leaves with many long white and green leaves that resemble the whiskers of a cat. A close relative from china called “Cat Whiskers” has the same shape and long thread like leaves as the bat plant, but has a white flower instead of purple and black.
